Some of the major activities of the SMF to support the cause are:

Swatcha Ganga Research Laboratory (SGRL)

Set up with the support of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SNF), this state of the art lab monitors the effects of the GAP schemes by direct measurement of water quality and is generation a valuable scientific database for analysis. This lab also serves schools and universities for  research on water quality.

 Swatcha Ganga Environmental Education Centre

This centre has been established in collaboration with the Oz Green of Australia. This centre is active in creating awareness among people by education them on environmental issues. The emphasis is on creating a programme which is consistent with the cultural beliefs and traditional lifestyles of the people, and unifying traditions with pressing environmental concerns.

The School Program

Helps teachers and students in Varanasi Schools come in contact with Ganga and search ways and means to minimise pollution. The School Programme identifies environmental issues and related education needs. Students have formed several environmental clubs. These students will grow up to become responsible eco-friendly citizens.

The Village Programme

This programme assists villagers gain access to clean drinking water. It promotes health through basic hygiene, child nutrition and maternal health education. It also provides relevant environmental education to villagers to assist them manage village environment better.

The Ghat Programme

Approximately sixty thousand persons take bath in the Ganga on its Ghats (banks). Activities like, defecation, washing clothes and bathing of cattle add to the pollution caused by point sources such as sewers. The Swatcha Ganga Environmental Education Centre is working with and is educating ghat users such as Boatmen, Ghat Priests and Washermen to care for the river.
