Veer Bhadra Mishra among seven Heroes of the Planet

Veer Bhadra Mishra, the founder of the Sankat Mochan Foundation, has been selected as one of the seven Heroes of the Planet by the TIME magazine. These heroes have been selected for their pioneering work in protecting the fresh waterways of the earth.

Mishra, 59, who was brought up with belief that Ganga is the mother to those who live by her, is at pains to explain the scourge of pollution which is killing his mother. In a war with the government agencies and municipal bodies, which he often finds agonizingly one-sided, he has taken the cudgels to plead, educate, train and help to save his Mother Ganga.

Mishra, who is a Priest by inheritance in one of the most pious temples of India, the Sankat Mochan Temple, is also a Civil Engineer by education. He is the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering in the prestigious Banaras Hindu University. He has used all the skills and influence he has as an engineer and priest to cleanse the holy water of Ganga. He has received help from the U.S. and Swedish Governments but finds it hard to wake up the Indian Bureaucracy.

Earlier too,  Mishra was awarded Global 500 Roll of Honour by UNEP in 1992 UNCED at Rio, Brazil.
