Ganga at Varanasi
The river Ganga gives life to and nurtures a vast population in cities
and settlements along its banks. The cities by its banks alone are home
to about twenty million people. The river provides water for irrigation,
drinking, industry, power plants and is also an important means of
navigation. |
The Ganga Basin, the entire area that drains into
Ganga,
covers more than a quarter of India's total area. Over a third of
India's population resides in the basin.

Views of the Gangotri Glacier
Ganga rises in the Himalayas, where it is known as Bhagirathi. Then the
river cuts through the Himalayas, meets another stream called the
Alaknanda at Devprayag. From there on the river takes the name Ganga.
