| The Sankat Mochan Foundation is a non-profit, non-political, secular, non-governmental organization. Founded in 1982 at Varanasi, it has been struggling to alleviate the environmental degradation of the River Ganga. The Foundation's efforts to restore the Ganga to its pristine purity and glory by preventing discharge of pollutants into it has found support from all corners of the world. The Swatcha Ganga (Clean Ganga) Campaign launched by the Foundation has brought to fore not only the extent of damage caused to the river but also to the environs around it. In the last seventeen years the SMF has proved its credibility as an effective Non Government Organisation capable of generating necessary influence to solve the problem of Ganga Pollution at the local level. Its studies have also revealed that Ganga Action Plan launched by the Government of India in 1986 have failed in its objectives to purify the waters of Ganga. The Swatcha Ganga Laboratory setup by the SMF is generating a scientific database on water quality.
